Gas Engine Construction

"A practical treatise describing the theory and principles of the action of gas engines of various types and the design and construction of a half horse power gas engine with illustrations of the work in actual progress, together with dimensioned working drawings giving clearly the sizes of the various details for the student, the scientific investigator and the amateur mechanic."

We first reprinted this in the late 1980's but have not had any in stock for years. The last time Dave Gingery stopped by he tried to bum a copy off me. All I had was one file copy that I would never part with. So I thought it was time to reprint a few and offer it for the next couple of years.

Dave and I agree. It's not the greatest engine construction book. It's the ONLY one. And this 1900 how-to book is definitely worth having. You'll be shown how to build a one-lung engine sporting a 2-1/2" bore and 4" stroke with a pair of nasty lookin' 14" flywheels.

You get all the info from foundry patterns, to making tooling for lathe set-ups, to machining the oilers, bearings, carburetor, hot-flame igniter and all the rest.

You get page after page of photographs of main bearings being drilled, side rods being turned, exhaust valve casings being bored, and more.

Chapters include how the gas engine works, the four classes of engines, design of a small gas engine, patterns, special tools, cylinder, piston, connecting rod, bearings, side rods, bed plate, fly-wheels and shaft, cylinder head, inlet valve, exhaust valve, clave gearing, governor, igniter and electrical connections, assembling, regulating and starting, carbureters, engine details & their design, and a bibliography.

Build an engine. Scale these plans down for a small lathe. Scale 'em up if you have a fork truck to move the castings around your shop. Neat book for the engine building crowd. Back for a while. Get one. 5-1/2 x 8-1/2 softcover over 300 pages
