Clay Modelling & Plaster Casting

Another gem from Hasluck's "Work" series from almost a hundred years ago.

Some guys (I think they call them blacksmiths) beat a piece of hot metal with gigantic hammers until they get what they want. Talk about hard work! No wonder they have arms as big as logs! But not me.

There's an easier way. As an experiment I once modeled an obscene hood ornament for my car out of clay, made a plaster waste mold, used that to make a plaster master that was then used to make a sand mold. A simple pour of the ladle, and I could make multiple copies quickly. Much simpler than big hammers.

Chapters include drawing for modellers, tools and materials, clay modelling, modelling ornament, modelling the human figure, waste-molding process, piece-moulding, gelatine moulding, taking plaster casts from nature, clay squeezing and molding, finishing plaster casts, and a picture frame in plaster.

This is an extremely useful technique that can be used by model builders, restorers of old homes who need to duplicate missing moldings, for those of use who pour iron and aluminum, for artists who love to sculpt, for those of us who love obscene hood ornaments and lots of normal people, too. It's just modeling clay and plaster-of-paris. A very powerful technique if used with some imagination.

Lots of illustrations: one on almost every page. Lots of information that can be adapted. Great lessons to be learned. Get a copy! 5-1/2 x 8-1/2 softcover 160 pages
