The Spadoni "Cycle" Engine Built

Another Atkinson Cycle engine is up and running. This one built by Steve Spadoni of Washington state. Thought you might like to see his engine so I attached one of the photos he sent along with some of my correspondence with him. It's sure is a good looking engine!

Hi Vince,

Thanks so much for the tips - she's running!I double checked my adjustments as you outlined, and I wound up shaving a little off the intake cam as you suggested, and I think I know why I had to.

I've attached some pics of my engine, and you'll probably notice that I made my water jacket different than yours ("personal touch", I guess!). I also mounted it different, which resulted in the centerline of the cylinder to be.200 inches lower than you call for. This necessitated making the push rod length adjustable to compensate, and my guess is that I also messed up the stroke geometry somehow due to the lower cylinder. Anyway, I'm certainly no engineer, but the short of it is that the engine runs now! I'm having a little trouble gettng it to run more than 3 or 4 minutes, but I think my carb may not be perfect, either (I'm also no machinist, but I'm learning!).

You may also notice from the pics that I made my own oiler, and that I used my own castings from patterns made from your plans. This has been a great, fun project - thanks so much for taking the time and effort required to put it all together in a book!

Last night I made a nice wooden case for the engine, with a little compartment for tools, funnel, etc. I belong to an antique engine club, and next month is our annual show.I intend to take the Atkinson and show it off - I'll bet it'll be the onlyo ne there like it!

Thanks again for the technical advice - I really appreciate it!

Best regards
Steve Spadoni
